Choose the right care

A known recurrence or a new problem?

In Washington, an online cold-sore visit should answer a narrow question: is this a recurrence of previously diagnosed oral herpes that can be managed safely through messages? If the sore is unfamiliar, persistent or changing, the more useful next step may be a medical or oral-medicine examination. An earlier herpes diagnosis should not make every future mouth problem an automatic refill.

Online review may fit

  • You are 18 or older and physically in Washington.
  • A healthcare provider previously diagnosed oral herpes or cold sores.
  • This looks like your usual recurrence and you meet the safety limits.
  • You can answer follow-up questions through the portal.

An exam or another care pathway

A first or uncertain mouth sore needs an examination. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, significant immune suppression, kidney disease needing adjusted dosing, or an antiviral allergy require another care pathway.

A genital-herpes diagnosis alone does not establish an oral-herpes diagnosis. This visit does not provide new herpes diagnosis or STI testing.

Clear costs

What does cold sore treatment cost in Washington?

$45Clinician assessment and visit follow-up messaging.
Medication is paid separately to the pharmacy.
Bidwell does not bill insurance for the visit.

The $45 visit is separate from the pharmacy charge. A local or mail-order pharmacy sets the medication and delivery costs. If an examination or specialty appointment is needed, confirm its cost and insurance arrangements directly; it is not bundled into a Bidwell visit.

Ask the pharmacy for the price of your exact medicine, strength and prescribed quantity. Cash prices, insurance coverage, discounts, brand availability and delivery fees can differ. The herpes treatment cost guide explains the separate visit and pharmacy charges; its examples are not a quote for your pharmacy.

Useful local resources

Washington care for a sore that is not following the usual pattern

When a mouth specialist may be useful

The University of Washington Oral Medicine Clinic provides a specialist pathway for oral conditions. For an unexplained or persistent lesion, ask your clinician or dentist whether an oral-medicine assessment is appropriate and check the clinic's appointment requirements before traveling to Seattle.

Specialty care is different from obtaining an antiviral for a known recurrence. An examination can help determine whether a lesion is related to herpes, a different infection, irritation or another condition. Do not use repeated leftover courses to postpone an assessment of a sore that has changed or is not healing.

Find a local starting point outside Seattle

The federal Find a Health Center map lets you search near your Washington ZIP code. Contact a medical or dental service about the lesion before arranging travel. A local clinician can help decide whether specialty referral is needed; not every mouth sore requires a trip to a university clinic.

For eye symptoms, trouble swallowing or drinking, severe illness or rapidly worsening symptoms, follow the urgent guidance below instead of waiting for a routine referral. Appointment availability and the need for an examination should guide the next step, not the convenience of a prescription form.

A Washington visit with a realistic pharmacy and privacy plan

Choose the pharmacy you can access after review, especially if your plans involve a ferry crossing or travel between communities. Check the specific pharmacy's dispensing hours, stock and fill estimate. A prescription sent electronically is not the same as a medicine ready for pickup, and a delivery estimate may not suit an early-treatment plan.

Use the patient portal for the clinical conversation. A message-based visit does not require a video appointment or a photo for this prior-diagnosis service, but the clinician may need more information before deciding. The practice's privacy policy and Washington consumer health data privacy notice explain the relevant practices. No healthcare service should promise absolute privacy.

If you live near Oregon or Idaho, or are visiting Canada, distinguish your Washington address from where you are receiving care. Those locations are outside Bidwell's current supported states. Tell the care team if travel changes your location while review is in progress.

For frequent familiar recurrences, record their timing, impact and past treatment response. That supports a discussion of an outbreak plan or off-label daily suppression. The clinical decision still depends on safety and history, not just the number of episodes.

Treatment decisions

Can I get valacyclovir or Valtrex online?

Eligible patients can request assessment for oral valacyclovir, the generic medication in Valtrex, or an acyclovir alternative. A clinician chooses treatment after review. Oral acyclovir for cold sores is off-label; famciclovir and topical acyclovir are not offered through this visit.

Early symptoms matter, but the timing needs context

Tell the clinician when tingling started and whether blisters have appeared. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. That is not a promise of benefit at any stage or proof that every later presentation is untreatable. Read the treatment-timing guide.

Antivirals do not cure herpes. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and a separate clinical decision. Follow your own prescription; do not borrow tablets, extend a course or use a genital-herpes regimen for a cold sore on your own.

Could it be something other than a cold sore?

Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are caused by herpes simplex virus. A recurrence may start with familiar tingling or burning before blisters appear on or around the lips. Appearance alone cannot confirm an unfamiliar diagnosis.

Canker sore
An ulcer inside the mouth rather than a typical lip-border recurrence. A large, persistent or recurring ulcer needs medical or dental assessment, particularly after two weeks.
Impetigo
Leaking sores with honey-colored crust can reflect a bacterial infection. An examination is needed; a herpes antiviral does not treat impetigo.
Angular cheilitis
Cracks at the mouth corners may have causes other than herpes. Persistent or recurring cracks need assessment.
Irritation or allergy
Lip products or toothpaste can irritate the skin. Get assessment if the problem is uncertain, persistent or worsening. Swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency.

How your online visit works

  1. Share the history. Give your prior diagnosis, symptom timing, medicines, allergies, physical location and chosen pharmacy.
  2. Respond to the clinician. Check portal messages. Review may lead to more questions, an examination recommendation or a prescription when appropriate.
  3. Confirm the pharmacy fill. If prescribed, check availability, total cost and directions with the pharmacy. Bidwell does not sell or ship medication.

When to seek urgent or emergency care

Get urgent same-day care for eye symptoms, sores near the eye, severe swelling, trouble swallowing or drinking, or fever with severe illness. Severe swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911. Confusion, new weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck, especially with fever, also require emergency care. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely; do not wait for an online message response.

Widespread or rapidly spreading blisters, especially with eczema or a weakened immune system, also need urgent in-person assessment. Do not wait for an online review.

Cold sore care in Washington: common questions

Can I request Valtrex online from Washington?

Yes, eligible adults physically in Washington with a prior oral-herpes diagnosis can request clinician review. Valacyclovir is the generic medication in Valtrex. The clinician decides whether treatment is appropriate and the pharmacy confirms availability.

Should a sore that keeps changing get an oral-medicine exam?

A changed, persistent or uncertain lesion needs reassessment. A medical or dental clinician can decide whether an oral-medicine referral is appropriate. Do not repeatedly treat an uncertain diagnosis with leftover antiviral medication.

Can I start while visiting Oregon or Canada?

No. Neither is in Bidwell's current service area. A Washington address or chosen Washington pharmacy does not replace being physically in a supported state during care.

Do I have to upload a photo or join a video call?

No photo or scheduled video call is required for this prior-diagnosis service. You provide your history and respond through portal messages. An uncertain lesion still needs an examination rather than a new online diagnosis.

Can I get cold-sore tablets over the counter?

Oral valacyclovir and acyclovir require a prescription. Some nonprescription cold-sore products are available, but they do not establish a diagnosis or replace an exam for an unfamiliar sore. Ask a pharmacist which product is appropriate for your situation.

Is it too late if a blister has already appeared?

Early treatment is preferred. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. Tell the clinician the timing and current appearance rather than assuming treatment must work or cannot help.

How quickly will my visit be reviewed?

Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies. Additional questions and pharmacy processing can affect the time to treatment. A submitted visit does not guarantee an immediate prescription or same-day pickup.

What if the clinician says I need in-person care?

You receive a full refund when a clinician determines that your case cannot be safely or appropriately treated through Bidwell Health, including when we refer you to in person care. Other refund terms and exceptions apply; read the full terms before starting.

Reduce the chance of passing it on

Avoid kissing and oral sex from the first tingling until the sore has healed. Do not share lip products or kiss a baby while you have a cold sore. Wash your hands after touching it. HSV can spread without visible sores, and medication does not make contact risk-free.
