Cold sore care in Iowa
How can I get cold sore treatment online in Iowa?
Adults 18 and older who are physically in Iowa and have a prior oral-herpes or cold-sore diagnosis can request a $45 online visit with Bidwell Health. A clinician licensed in Iowa reviews your history and prescribes only when appropriate; medication is paid separately at your chosen pharmacy. Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies.
No required subscription or video call. Prescription only if appropriate.
First sore or unsure? Choose an in-person examination.
Start with the care you need
For an Iowan deciding whether to drive to a clinic, the question is what that visit needs to accomplish. An established cold-sore diagnosis may allow a message-based assessment. A new mouth ulcer, an unusual rash or a sore that is not healing calls for an examination, even when the trip is inconvenient.
A first or uncertain mouth sore needs an examination. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, significant immune suppression, kidney disease needing adjusted dosing, or an antiviral allergy require another care pathway.
A genital-herpes diagnosis alone does not establish that a new mouth sore is oral herpes. Bidwell does not provide a new herpes diagnosis or STI testing through this visit.
Know the cost
$45 for the visit, plus your pharmacy's charge
The $45 covers clinician assessment and visit follow-up messaging. No insurance billing or subscription. Medication, shipping and separate examinations or tests cost extra.
If cost is driving the decision, ask a local clinic about its payment options before assuming an online visit is cheaper. A visit that cannot examine an unfamiliar sore may not meet your need, regardless of its advertised price.
Ask your pharmacy for the full prescription price. Medicine, quantity, coverage and pharmacy affect the charge; there is no fixed medication price here.
Message-based assessment
Bidwell may fit a recognized recurrence after a prior diagnosis. It costs $45 for review and visit follow-up messaging; a pharmacy fill is a separate expense.
Primary care or a community clinic
Consider this when you need someone to examine the lesion, coordinate other medical conditions or review frequent episodes over time. Ask about insurance or self-pay arrangements.
Urgent care
Useful when an examination is needed promptly and your usual office cannot see you. Confirm local availability, the visit fee and whether any testing costs extra.
A different telehealth provider
Compare diagnosis requirements, supported locations, follow-up access and total charges. A price shown for medication alone does not tell you what a clinical assessment costs.
Your local options
In Iowa: decide whether you need a prescription review or an exam
Before making a long trip
Write down when the symptoms started, whether a healthcare provider previously diagnosed oral herpes, and what is different this time. These details help a clinic direct you to the right appointment. If this is the usual recurrent pattern and you meet the safety limits below, online review may avoid travel for the assessment. It does not remove the need to obtain any prescribed medicine or to attend an examination if advised.
For a new or unclear sore, ask the nearby medical or dental office whether it evaluates lip and mouth lesions. Some problems belong in general medical care; others may need a dentist or oral-medicine specialist. Do not choose an antiviral visit simply because it is easier to reach.
Central Iowa examination options
Primary Health Care's location directory lists medical and dental services in Des Moines, Urbandale, Ames and Marshalltown. Select the location first, then check the services offered there. Its University Avenue location lists medical care, dental care and a pharmacy; the Marshalltown listing includes pharmacy pickup. Ask the clinic about eligibility for its pharmacy services instead of assuming it fills every outside prescription.
Outside those communities, the federal Find a Health Center map can help identify a center near your Iowa ZIP code. Before traveling, confirm whether it can examine your particular problem and what the visit would cost. The Free Clinics of Iowa directory is another option to check when cost is a barrier; use each clinic's current hours and eligibility details.
Persistent or hard-to-identify mouth lesions
The University of Iowa's dental clinic directory includes an Oral Pathology service in Iowa City for diseases of the mouth. A local clinician or dentist can help determine whether that specialty assessment fits an unresolved lesion. Ask about referral arrangements and scheduling before traveling to Iowa City. This is a planned examination pathway, not an emergency service.
An online assessment still needs a practical fill plan
If the pharmacy you use requires a drive, check its dispensing hours and ability to fill the prescription before setting off. Ask whether the medicine is in stock at that branch, what the full prescribed quantity will cost, and when it will be ready. Do not treat the time you submit a visit as the time a pharmacy can hand over medication.
A clinic with a pharmacy and a retail pharmacy are not always interchangeable. Some clinic pharmacy arrangements are tied to care at that clinic. If you choose a pharmacy after reading a local resource above, confirm that it accepts outside prescriptions before listing it in your Bidwell visit.
For people near a state line, submitting from Iowa is different from submitting while at work or visiting family across the border. Report where you actually are during care. If a trip or a pharmacy change alters your plan, use portal messaging so the clinician can review the updated details. Online access does not extend Bidwell's service into an unsupported state.
Could the sore be something else?
Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are caused by herpes simplex virus. A recurrence may start with familiar tingling or burning before blisters appear on or around the lips. These clues cannot diagnose an unfamiliar lesion.
Canker sore
An ulcer inside the mouth, not caused by herpes. Get a medical or dental exam for a large, persistent or recurring ulcer, especially after two weeks.
Impetigo
Leaking sores with honey-colored crust can be bacterial. Get an examination; a cold-sore antiviral is not the treatment for impetigo.
Angular cheilitis
Cracks at the mouth corners can reflect irritation or infection other than herpes. Persistent or recurring cracks need an examination.
Allergic or irritant reaction
Lip products or toothpaste can cause itchy, red or scaly skin. Seek assessment if uncertain, persistent or worsening; swelling with breathing difficulty means call 911.
For severe symptoms, follow the urgent-care instructions below.
From visit request to treatment decision
- Share your history: diagnosis, symptom timing, medicines, allergies, location and pharmacy.
- Check your portal: the clinician may ask questions, recommend an exam or prescribe when appropriate.
- Arrange any prescribed fill: confirm availability and follow your directions. Bidwell does not sell or ship medicine.
Oral valacyclovir or acyclovir may be considered. Oral acyclovir for cold sores is off-label; famciclovir and topical acyclovir are not offered through this visit. Early treatment can help, but review and dispensing are not immediate. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and a separate clinical decision.
When to seek urgent or emergency care
Get urgent same-day care for eye symptoms, sores near the eye, severe swelling, trouble swallowing or drinking, or fever with severe illness. Severe swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911. Confusion, new weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck, especially with fever, also require emergency care. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely; do not wait for an online message response.
A sore that is not healing, has changed from your usual pattern or keeps returning needs reassessment. Do not keep treating an uncertain diagnosis with leftover medication.
Iowa visit questions
Is a prior genital-herpes diagnosis enough?
No. A diagnosis of genital herpes alone does not establish that an unfamiliar mouth sore is oral herpes. This visit requires a prior oral-herpes or cold-sore diagnosis from a healthcare provider.
Can I complete the review without a video appointment?
Yes. You share your history and answer clinician questions through messages. No photo is required for this prior-diagnosis service. Keep access to your portal so a request for information does not go unanswered.
What if the closest clinic is far away?
Distance does not change which symptoms need an examination. For a nonurgent problem, call a nearby medical office or use the Iowa resources above to identify an appropriate service before traveling. Follow the urgent-care instructions below when red flags are present.
Can I start from Nebraska or Illinois with an Iowa address?
No. An Iowa home address does not make a visit eligible while you are physically in another state. Check the states served and report your actual location; Bidwell does not currently serve Nebraska or Illinois.
What if online treatment is not appropriate?
You receive a full refund when a clinician determines that your case cannot be safely or appropriately treated through Bidwell Health, including when we refer you to in person care. Other refund terms and exceptions apply; read the full terms before starting.
Read the full visit and refund terms and privacy policy.
Protect others during an outbreak
Avoid kissing and oral sex from the first tingling until the sore has healed. Do not share lip products or kiss a baby while you have a cold sore. Wash your hands after touching it. HSV can spread without visible sores, and medicine does not make contact risk-free.
