Online care in Connecticut
How can I get cold sore treatment online in Connecticut?
Start cold sore visit $45Medication costs extra. No required subscription or video call.
Yes. Adults 18 and older who are physically in Connecticut and have a prior oral-herpes or cold-sore diagnosis can request a $45 online visit. A clinician licensed in Connecticut reviews your history and prescribes only when appropriate; medication is paid separately at your chosen pharmacy.
Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies.

Choose the right care
A known recurrence or a new problem?
In Connecticut, choosing the right service starts with the location of the sore, not just the nearest appointment. A familiar recurrence on or around the lip after a previous oral-herpes diagnosis may fit online review. An unfamiliar ulcer inside the mouth, a recurring crack at the corner or a lesion that will not heal may need a medical or dental examination.
Online review may fit
- You are 18 or older and physically in Connecticut.
- A healthcare provider previously diagnosed oral herpes or cold sores.
- This looks like your usual recurrence and you meet the safety limits.
- You can answer follow-up questions through the portal.
An exam or another care pathway
A first or uncertain mouth sore needs an examination. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, significant immune suppression, kidney disease needing adjusted dosing, or an antiviral allergy require another care pathway.
A genital-herpes diagnosis alone does not establish an oral-herpes diagnosis. This visit does not provide new herpes diagnosis or STI testing.
Clear costs
What does cold sore treatment cost in Connecticut?
Medication is paid separately to the pharmacy.
Bidwell does not bill insurance for the visit.
For a sore that needs examination, compare your covered medical or dental options with self-pay care before choosing. Bidwell charges $45 for its assessment and does not bill insurance. Your pharmacy can separately explain whether prescription coverage or a discount applies to an approved medication.
Ask the pharmacy for the price of your exact medicine, strength and prescribed quantity. Cash prices, insurance coverage, discounts, brand availability and delivery fees can differ. The herpes treatment cost guide explains the separate visit and pharmacy charges; its examples are not a quote for your pharmacy.
How does this compare with other care?
| Option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bidwell online visit | A familiar recurrence after a prior diagnosis, within the service limits. | $45 review; separate pharmacy charge; no exam or immediate-fill promise. |
| Primary care or community clinic | You need an exam, continuity of care or broader medical assessment. | Appointment availability, insurance or self-pay cost, and any testing fees. |
| Urgent care | You need a prompt in-person assessment and your usual office is unavailable. | Services offered, availability and complete visit charges. |
| Another online service | You are comparing a different consultation format or treatment scope. | Who reviews the visit, diagnosis limits, subscription terms and total charges. |
For emergencies, seek emergency care. Do not choose a routine service based on price.

Medical care and dental care answer different questions
Connecticut's Community Health Center Association provides a Find a CT Health Center link and describes its members' medical and dental care. Use the linked locator to find a service near your town. Ask the center which appointment fits a lip or mouth lesion before booking; not every site offers the same services.
A medical visit may be appropriate for a rash, fever or suspected infection. A dentist or oral-medicine service can assess persistent problems inside the mouth. Neither a dental appointment nor an antiviral prescription should be selected solely because its name includes the word oral.
When a specialty examination may help
UConn Health's dental-care directory includes oral medicine among its services. For a lesion that remains unexplained or has not healed, ask your clinician or dentist whether this pathway is appropriate. Confirm the appointment process, location and payment arrangements with UConn before traveling.
The directory is a way to locate care, not a guarantee of an immediate evaluation. Urgent eye symptoms, significant swelling or difficulty drinking should follow the escalation guidance on this page, without waiting for a specialty appointment.
Working or traveling across Connecticut's borders
If you live in Stamford but are at work in New York, or live near the Massachusetts or Rhode Island border, the address on your account does not determine visit eligibility. Bidwell serves Connecticut but does not currently serve those three neighboring states. Report where you are physically located during care, including if that location changes while the clinician is reviewing your request.
Choose a dispensing location you can reasonably reach. A pharmacy near home might be closed when you return from work, while a different branch may have different hours or stock. Contact the pharmacy before assuming an electronic prescription will be ready at a particular time.
If your usual prescriber already authorized refills, ask your pharmacy whether a valid refill remains. You may not need another clinical visit simply to use an existing authorized refill. A new prescription request requires a fresh clinical decision, and an older prescription does not confirm that an unusual new sore has the same diagnosis.
Treatment decisions
Can I get valacyclovir or Valtrex online?
Eligible patients can request assessment for oral valacyclovir, the generic medication in Valtrex, or an acyclovir alternative. A clinician chooses treatment after review. Oral acyclovir for cold sores is off-label; famciclovir and topical acyclovir are not offered through this visit.
Early symptoms matter, but the timing needs context
Tell the clinician when tingling started and whether blisters have appeared. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. That is not a promise of benefit at any stage or proof that every later presentation is untreatable. Read the treatment-timing guide.
Antivirals do not cure herpes. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and a separate clinical decision. Follow your own prescription; do not borrow tablets, extend a course or use a genital-herpes regimen for a cold sore on your own.
Could it be something other than a cold sore?
Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are caused by herpes simplex virus. A recurrence may start with familiar tingling or burning before blisters appear on or around the lips. Appearance alone cannot confirm an unfamiliar diagnosis.
- Canker sore
- An ulcer inside the mouth rather than a typical lip-border recurrence. A large, persistent or recurring ulcer needs medical or dental assessment, particularly after two weeks.
- Impetigo
- Leaking sores with honey-colored crust can reflect a bacterial infection. An examination is needed; a herpes antiviral does not treat impetigo.
- Angular cheilitis
- Cracks at the mouth corners may have causes other than herpes. Persistent or recurring cracks need assessment.
- Irritation or allergy
- Lip products or toothpaste can irritate the skin. Get assessment if the problem is uncertain, persistent or worsening. Swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency.
How your online visit works
- Share the history. Give your prior diagnosis, symptom timing, medicines, allergies, physical location and chosen pharmacy.
- Respond to the clinician. Check portal messages. Review may lead to more questions, an examination recommendation or a prescription when appropriate.
- Confirm the pharmacy fill. If prescribed, check availability, total cost and directions with the pharmacy. Bidwell does not sell or ship medication.
When to seek urgent or emergency care
Get urgent same-day care for eye symptoms, sores near the eye, severe swelling, trouble swallowing or drinking, or fever with severe illness. Severe swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911. Confusion, new weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck, especially with fever, also require emergency care. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely; do not wait for an online message response.
Widespread or rapidly spreading blisters, especially with eczema or a weakened immune system, also need urgent in-person assessment. Do not wait for an online review.
Cold sore care in Connecticut: common questions
Can Connecticut residents use this from New York?
No. The visit depends on your physical location during care, not residency. Bidwell does not currently serve New York. Do not select Connecticut while you are actually across the state line.
Is a canker sore inside my mouth eligible?
A canker sore is not a cold sore, and antivirals for herpes do not treat it. An unfamiliar mouth ulcer needs assessment rather than a new cold-sore diagnosis through this service.
Should I book a dentist or an online cold-sore visit?
Choose an exam for an uncertain, persistent or different lesion. A previously diagnosed, familiar oral-herpes recurrence may fit Bidwell. If you are unsure which office to use, describe the lesion to a medical or dental clinic before scheduling.
Can I refill an old valacyclovir prescription first?
Ask the pharmacy whether the prescription is still valid and has authorized refills. Follow the existing directions only for the situation your prescriber intended. A different sore, changed health history or expired prescription needs clinician advice.
Can I get cold-sore tablets over the counter?
Oral valacyclovir and acyclovir require a prescription. Some nonprescription cold-sore products are available, but they do not establish a diagnosis or replace an exam for an unfamiliar sore. Ask a pharmacist which product is appropriate for your situation.
Is it too late if a blister has already appeared?
Early treatment is preferred. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. Tell the clinician the timing and current appearance rather than assuming treatment must work or cannot help.
How quickly will my visit be reviewed?
Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies. Additional questions and pharmacy processing can affect the time to treatment. A submitted visit does not guarantee an immediate prescription or same-day pickup.
What if the clinician says I need in-person care?
You receive a full refund when a clinician determines that your case cannot be safely or appropriately treated through Bidwell Health, including when we refer you to in person care. Other refund terms and exceptions apply; read the full terms before starting.

Reduce the chance of passing it on
Avoid kissing and oral sex from the first tingling until the sore has healed. Do not share lip products or kiss a baby while you have a cold sore. Wash your hands after touching it. HSV can spread without visible sores, and medication does not make contact risk-free.
