Cold sore care in Arizona
How can I get cold sore treatment online in Arizona?
Adults 18 and older who are physically in Arizona and have a prior oral-herpes or cold-sore diagnosis can request a $45 online visit with Bidwell Health. A clinician licensed in Arizona reviews your history and prescribes only when appropriate; medication is paid separately at your chosen pharmacy. Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies.
No required subscription or video call. Prescription only if appropriate.
First sore or unsure? Choose an in-person examination.
Start with the care you need
Arizona patients may be balancing a familiar outbreak with a trip, a distant pharmacy or an insurance-network decision. Start by identifying the kind of care you need. This service reviews previously diagnosed cold sores; it cannot establish that a new lip lesion is herpes.
A first or uncertain mouth sore needs an examination. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, significant immune suppression, kidney disease needing adjusted dosing, or an antiviral allergy require another care pathway.
A genital-herpes diagnosis alone does not establish that a new mouth sore is oral herpes. Bidwell does not provide a new herpes diagnosis or STI testing through this visit.
Know the cost
$45 for the visit, plus your pharmacy's charge
The $45 covers clinician assessment and visit follow-up messaging. No insurance billing or subscription. Medication, shipping and separate examinations or tests cost extra.
If you have prescription coverage, the pharmacy can compare the applicable benefit with its cash price. Use the actual prescribed medicine, strength and quantity for that comparison. A price from a different pharmacy or a different quantity is not your final bill.
Ask your pharmacy for the full prescription price. Medicine, quantity, coverage and pharmacy affect the charge; there is no fixed medication price here.
Bidwell Health
An Arizona-licensed clinician reviews eligible recurrent cold sores by messages. The $45 charge covers the assessment and visit follow-up; it does not include medication.
An established primary-care office
May be a better route for recurring problems needing an exam or coordination with your other care. Ask your plan about network status and your share of the cost.
Urgent care nearby
Choose an examination pathway for a new or uncertain sore or symptoms needing timely hands-on assessment. Confirm the services and separate lab charges before a nonemergency visit.
Other online options
Check whether the service accepts your diagnosis history, operates in Arizona and charges for membership, follow-up or shipping. Prescription approval remains a clinical decision.
Your local options
In Arizona: choose a care route you can actually reach
If you need an examination rather than another antiviral
The Arizona Alliance for Community Health Centers finder is a starting point for local primary care. The Alliance describes centers that accept public and private insurance and offer fees based on income. Ask the individual center about a lip or mouth examination, appointment availability and your likely charge. Sliding fees depend on the center's process; they are not a fixed price for every patient.
Search near the place you are staying, not only near your permanent address. If you are away from Phoenix or Tucson and a suggested location requires substantial travel, call before leaving to check that it provides the service you need. A health-center address alone does not tell you whether an oral lesion can be assessed that day.
If you have AHCCCS coverage
The AHCCCS provider directory allows searches by location, provider type and specialty, and includes information about accepting new members. An enrolled provider is not necessarily contracted with your particular health plan. Confirm the network with your plan or the office before booking.
This can help you compare a covered in-person appointment with Bidwell's cash-pay assessment. Bidwell does not bill AHCCCS or other insurance. A benefit you have through your plan does not automatically apply to this $45 visit, and the pharmacy handles any prescription benefit separately.
If your next stop is outside Arizona
Tell the clinician if you are leaving Arizona, crossing a state line or traveling internationally while the visit is being reviewed. An Arizona mailing address is not a substitute for being physically in Arizona during care. Review timing varies, so submitting just before departure does not guarantee a prescription before you leave. Check your destination's availability rather than continuing a visit under an old location.
Remote travel, pharmacy access and a reachable clinician
Before going somewhere with limited connectivity, think through how you will read portal questions and reach a pharmacy or clinic if the plan changes. A message-based assessment does not provide continuous monitoring. If symptoms become urgent, seek local care rather than waiting until you can reconnect.
Choose a pharmacy with a dispensing counter you can reach during its actual hours. Call about the prescribed strength and quantity once the plan is known. A location that carries the medicine may still need time to process a prescription, and stock at another branch does not establish stock at yours.
Delivery is a separate logistical choice. Ask the pharmacy whether it serves the address where you will be, what shipping costs and when a package should arrive. Do not rely on a delivery estimate for an outbreak that needs prompt assessment. If you are changing accommodation, make sure the destination will still be usable when the shipment is expected.
For a familiar recurrence, it may help to discuss a future outbreak plan at a nonurgent visit. That is different from assuming a supply or a preventive prescription will be issued today. Frequent recurrences, a changed pattern or a lesion that persists warrant a fresh clinical assessment.
Could the sore be something else?
Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are caused by herpes simplex virus. A recurrence may start with familiar tingling or burning before blisters appear on or around the lips. These clues cannot diagnose an unfamiliar lesion.
Canker sore
An ulcer inside the mouth, not caused by herpes. Get a medical or dental exam for a large, persistent or recurring ulcer, especially after two weeks.
Impetigo
Leaking sores with honey-colored crust can be bacterial. Get an examination; a cold-sore antiviral is not the treatment for impetigo.
Angular cheilitis
Cracks at the mouth corners can reflect irritation or infection other than herpes. Persistent or recurring cracks need an examination.
Allergic or irritant reaction
Lip products or toothpaste can cause itchy, red or scaly skin. Seek assessment if uncertain, persistent or worsening; swelling with breathing difficulty means call 911.
For severe symptoms, follow the urgent-care instructions below.
From visit request to treatment decision
- Share your history: diagnosis, symptom timing, medicines, allergies, location and pharmacy.
- Check your portal: the clinician may ask questions, recommend an exam or prescribe when appropriate.
- Arrange any prescribed fill: confirm availability and follow your directions. Bidwell does not sell or ship medicine.
Oral valacyclovir or acyclovir may be considered. Oral acyclovir for cold sores is off-label; famciclovir and topical acyclovir are not offered through this visit. Early treatment can help, but review and dispensing are not immediate. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and a separate clinical decision.
When to seek urgent or emergency care
Get urgent same-day care for eye symptoms, sores near the eye, severe swelling, trouble swallowing or drinking, or fever with severe illness. Severe swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911. Confusion, new weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck, especially with fever, also require emergency care. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely; do not wait for an online message response.
A sore that is not healing, has changed from your usual pattern or keeps returning needs reassessment. Do not keep treating an uncertain diagnosis with leftover medication.
Arizona visit questions
Is this available outside Phoenix and Tucson?
The eligibility rule is physical presence in Arizona, not residence in a particular city. You must also meet the age, prior-diagnosis and safety requirements. You still need a workable pharmacy plan and access to in-person care when indicated.
Do I need to be an Arizona resident?
No. An eligible adult can request care while physically in Arizona. Tell us where you are receiving care and whether you will move during the review. You cannot use an Arizona address while actually receiving care in an unsupported state.
Does Bidwell accept my AHCCCS plan?
Bidwell is cash-pay and does not bill insurance. The visit fee is $45. Use the network information from your health plan if you want to compare an in-network appointment; medication coverage is handled separately by the pharmacy.
Is a live video connection required?
No. This visit uses messages and does not require a photo for a previously diagnosed cold sore. You do need to check your portal and answer any follow-up questions. This is not an emergency or continuously monitored service.
What if online treatment is not appropriate?
You receive a full refund when a clinician determines that your case cannot be safely or appropriately treated through Bidwell Health, including when we refer you to in person care. Other refund terms and exceptions apply; read the full terms before starting.

Protect others during an outbreak
Avoid kissing and oral sex from the first tingling until the sore has healed. Do not share lip products or kiss a baby while you have a cold sore. Wash your hands after touching it. HSV can spread without visible sores, and medicine does not make contact risk-free.
