Online care in Maryland
How can I get cold sore treatment online in Maryland?
Start cold sore visit $45Medication costs extra. No required subscription or video call.
Yes. Adults 18 and older who are physically in Maryland and have a prior oral-herpes or cold-sore diagnosis can request a $45 online visit. A clinician licensed in Maryland reviews your history and prescribes only when appropriate; medication is paid separately at your chosen pharmacy.
Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies.

Choose the right care
A known recurrence or a new problem?
For someone in Maryland, an online cold-sore visit is one option alongside an existing primary-care office, a HealthChoice provider or a community clinic. The best fit depends on whether this is a known recurrence and whether you need an examination. A fixed online fee can be convenient, but it is not a substitute for checking a covered option that better meets your needs.
Online review may fit
- You are 18 or older and physically in Maryland.
- A healthcare provider previously diagnosed oral herpes or cold sores.
- This looks like your usual recurrence and you meet the safety limits.
- You can answer follow-up questions through the portal.
An exam or another care pathway
A first or uncertain mouth sore needs an examination. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, significant immune suppression, kidney disease needing adjusted dosing, or an antiviral allergy require another care pathway.
A genital-herpes diagnosis alone does not establish an oral-herpes diagnosis. This visit does not provide new herpes diagnosis or STI testing.
Clear costs
What does cold sore treatment cost in Maryland?
Medication is paid separately to the pharmacy.
Bidwell does not bill insurance for the visit.
For a HealthChoice member, compare a covered examination through the plan with Bidwell's $45 cash-pay review. No insurance is billed for the Bidwell visit. The pharmacy sets the medication charge and can check prescription coverage separately; the $45 does not include a guaranteed supply of Valtrex or generic valacyclovir.
Ask the pharmacy for the price of your exact medicine, strength and prescribed quantity. Cash prices, insurance coverage, discounts, brand availability and delivery fees can differ. The herpes treatment cost guide explains the separate visit and pharmacy charges; its examples are not a quote for your pharmacy.
How does this compare with other care?
| Option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bidwell online visit | A familiar recurrence after a prior diagnosis, within the service limits. | $45 review; separate pharmacy charge; no exam or immediate-fill promise. |
| Primary care or community clinic | You need an exam, continuity of care or broader medical assessment. | Appointment availability, insurance or self-pay cost, and any testing fees. |
| Urgent care | You need a prompt in-person assessment and your usual office is unavailable. | Services offered, availability and complete visit charges. |
| Another online service | You are comparing a different consultation format or treatment scope. | Who reviews the visit, diagnosis limits, subscription terms and total charges. |
For emergencies, seek emergency care. Do not choose a routine service based on price.
Useful local resources
Maryland: compare cash-pay care with available examination options
If you have Maryland Medicaid
The Maryland Department of Health Provider Finder lets you search by location and HealthChoice plan. The department explains that listed providers accept Medicaid, but not every provider accepts every plan. Use your plan's directory or contact the office to confirm its other locations, new-patient availability and relevant services.
This can help when a first or uncertain sore needs an in-person evaluation. Bidwell is a separate cash-pay service and does not bill Medicaid or other insurance for the visit. A pharmacy benefit is separate from coverage for the clinician assessment; confirm each charge with the organization providing it.
If you need a community clinic
The Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Health Centers directory lists member centers in Maryland and Delaware. Select a Maryland location convenient to where you are, then check its medical or dental services. Ask about appointment availability and payment options rather than assuming every location can examine every type of mouth lesion.
For a persistent ulcer or recurring crack, explain what makes the sore unusual when calling. That helps the office decide whether a medical appointment, dental assessment or another service is appropriate. A directory search does not establish a diagnosis or an appointment.
Maryland care when your day crosses a state line
A Maryland resident may spend part of the day in Washington, DC, Virginia or Pennsylvania. Report the place where you are receiving care, not simply the address where you sleep. Bidwell currently serves Maryland and Virginia, but not Washington, DC, Pennsylvania or Delaware. A Maryland pharmacy selection does not extend the clinical service into an unsupported location.
If you are away from home on the Eastern Shore or traveling through western Maryland, pick a pharmacy based on access during your actual stay. Verify its dispensing hours and whether it has the prescribed medicine. Changing the pharmacy may require coordination, so message the care team rather than submitting a second visit for the same request.
If this recurrence has become more frequent or the usual medicine has not helped, say so during review. A repeated prescription is not always the right response. The clinician may recommend reassessment, an examination or discussion of a prevention plan depending on the history.
Treatment decisions
Can I get valacyclovir or Valtrex online?
Eligible patients can request assessment for oral valacyclovir, the generic medication in Valtrex, or an acyclovir alternative. A clinician chooses treatment after review. Oral acyclovir for cold sores is off-label; famciclovir and topical acyclovir are not offered through this visit.
Early symptoms matter, but the timing needs context
Tell the clinician when tingling started and whether blisters have appeared. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. That is not a promise of benefit at any stage or proof that every later presentation is untreatable. Read the treatment-timing guide.
Antivirals do not cure herpes. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and a separate clinical decision. Follow your own prescription; do not borrow tablets, extend a course or use a genital-herpes regimen for a cold sore on your own.
Could it be something other than a cold sore?
Cold sores, also called herpes labialis, are caused by herpes simplex virus. A recurrence may start with familiar tingling or burning before blisters appear on or around the lips. Appearance alone cannot confirm an unfamiliar diagnosis.
- Canker sore
- An ulcer inside the mouth rather than a typical lip-border recurrence. A large, persistent or recurring ulcer needs medical or dental assessment, particularly after two weeks.
- Impetigo
- Leaking sores with honey-colored crust can reflect a bacterial infection. An examination is needed; a herpes antiviral does not treat impetigo.
- Angular cheilitis
- Cracks at the mouth corners may have causes other than herpes. Persistent or recurring cracks need assessment.
- Irritation or allergy
- Lip products or toothpaste can irritate the skin. Get assessment if the problem is uncertain, persistent or worsening. Swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency.
How your online visit works
- Share the history. Give your prior diagnosis, symptom timing, medicines, allergies, physical location and chosen pharmacy.
- Respond to the clinician. Check portal messages. Review may lead to more questions, an examination recommendation or a prescription when appropriate.
- Confirm the pharmacy fill. If prescribed, check availability, total cost and directions with the pharmacy. Bidwell does not sell or ship medication.
When to seek urgent or emergency care
Get urgent same-day care for eye symptoms, sores near the eye, severe swelling, trouble swallowing or drinking, or fever with severe illness. Severe swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911. Confusion, new weakness, or a severe headache with a stiff neck, especially with fever, also require emergency care. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely; do not wait for an online message response.
Widespread or rapidly spreading blisters, especially with eczema or a weakened immune system, also need urgent in-person assessment. Do not wait for an online review.
Cold sore care in Maryland: common questions
Does Bidwell bill Maryland Medicaid for this visit?
No. Bidwell is cash-pay and the clinician-review fee is $45. If you want to use HealthChoice for an examination, check the Maryland provider finder and your plan. Ask the pharmacy separately about medication coverage.
Can I submit while working in Washington, DC?
No. Washington, DC is not a supported location. A Maryland home address does not make a visit eligible while you are physically in DC. Report your actual location during care.
Does the Maryland pharmacy determine my eligibility?
No. Eligibility is based on the patient's physical location and clinical fit. Pharmacy choice is a separate part of arranging an approved prescription.
What if I keep needing outbreak medicine?
Tell the clinician how often the sores recur, their impact and how previous treatment worked. Daily cold-sore suppression is off-label and requires an individualized assessment; frequent symptoms should not be managed by automatically repeating courses.
Can I get cold-sore tablets over the counter?
Oral valacyclovir and acyclovir require a prescription. Some nonprescription cold-sore products are available, but they do not establish a diagnosis or replace an exam for an unfamiliar sore. Ask a pharmacist which product is appropriate for your situation.
Is it too late if a blister has already appeared?
Early treatment is preferred. The US Valtrex label says effectiveness when started after visible cold-sore signs develop has not been established. Tell the clinician the timing and current appearance rather than assuming treatment must work or cannot help.
How quickly will my visit be reviewed?
Reviewed 7 days a week, including weekends; timing varies. Additional questions and pharmacy processing can affect the time to treatment. A submitted visit does not guarantee an immediate prescription or same-day pickup.
What if the clinician says I need in-person care?
You receive a full refund when a clinician determines that your case cannot be safely or appropriately treated through Bidwell Health, including when we refer you to in person care. Other refund terms and exceptions apply; read the full terms before starting.

Reduce the chance of passing it on
Avoid kissing and oral sex from the first tingling until the sore has healed. Do not share lip products or kiss a baby while you have a cold sore. Wash your hands after touching it. HSV can spread without visible sores, and medication does not make contact risk-free.
