Fishy vaginal odor
A fishy vaginal odor, especially with thin gray or white discharge, is a common BV pattern. The presence of pain, fever, pregnancy, or STI concern changes the safest next step.

Pattern that often suggests BV
- Thin gray or white discharge
- Fishy odor, often stronger after sex
- Mild irritation or burning
- Often little or no itching
When online BV treatment may not fit
- Pregnancy
- Pelvic pain
- Fever
- Green or yellow discharge
- Possible STI exposure
- Genital sores
- Abnormal bleeding
Why guessing can backfire
Yeast medications do not treat BV. BV treatment usually requires prescription antibiotics, while STI concern requires testing and sometimes partner treatment.
