What the clinician checks
The clinician reviews the presentation and safety history and may ask for more information or an in-person assessment. Sudden, patchy, painful or scarred areas should not simply be treated as male pattern loss. Tell the clinician about mood or sexual symptoms, prostate testing and fertility concerns.
What to expect
Benefit generally requires at least three months, with progress often reviewed over six to twelve months. Maintaining existing hair can be a useful result. Continued use is usually needed to preserve benefit; effectiveness at bitemporal recession is not established in the label.
What are the main precautions?
The labeled hair-loss dose is 1 mg daily, with or without food. If a tablet is missed, take the next one as usual; do not take an extra dose. In first-year trials, one or more of decreased libido, erectile dysfunction or ejaculation disorder occurred in 3.8% with finasteride versus 2.1% with placebo. Persistent sexual symptoms after stopping and mood effects are reported in labeling, with no reliable frequency estimate.
Stop finasteride 1 mg and seek medical advice for mood changes; obtain immediate help if you cannot stay safe. Report breast changes or sexual symptoms. Trouble breathing or throat swelling needs emergency care. Tell anyone interpreting PSA tests about treatment.
